Copenhagen, Denmark, March 16, 2021 <\/strong>\u2013 Hearing aid manufacturer, Oticon<\/a>,\ntogether with their research centre, Eriksholm, have unveiled new research revealing\nthat hearing aids could reduce the impact that sound, and more specifically\nnoise, has on a person\u2019s stress levels. Providing a glimpse into the future of\ndata-driven hearing aid innovation, the new data collected could one day see\nwell-fitted hearing aids actually being used to help reduce raised heart rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAs\npart of its ongoing BrainHearing\nresearch<\/a> programme, which looks at reducing the listening effort of a\nperson with hearing loss, Oticon, at their research centre Eriksholm, is\ndelving deeper than ever before into the world of sound we live in, working on\nnew ways to determine how changes in sound influence health. Its new hearing research\nincludes a study of heart health. Eriksholm has measured pupil dilation to\ndetermine stress caused by sounds and the effort of listening, as well as studied\nheart rate both in the lab and the real-world, the results of which demonstrate\nthe importance of effective hearing aid technology and correct fitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe\nlab study[i]<\/a>\ndiscovered that periods of noise, especially when listening to speech, increase\nstress and demonstrates that noise reduction from Oticon Opn\u2122 hearing aids delivers\nquality sound which helps reduce a person\u2019s stress reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOticon\nhas now broken out of the lab in order to study how real-life sound can impact\nhealth[ii]<\/a>.\nWith access to the logged acoustic data of its internet-connected hearing aids\nvia the Oticon ON app* and continuous mean heart rate in 5-minute intervals\nfrom the users\u2019 own wearables, Oticon is able to see how real-world sound\nexposure affects heart rate and indeed how often a person\u2019s heart rate is\nincreased by sound changes. Oticon\u2019s novel observations to date include that the\nsound we live in contributes to approximately 4% of the fluctuation in mean\nheart rate throughout the day. Most prominently, periods with loud sound increase\nmean heart rate while access to a better sound quality (i.e., a higher signal-to-noise\nratio) reduces this stress reaction and lowers mean heart rate, even<\/em> when\nthe sound is loud. Based on this data, if hearing technology was used to help\nreduce the impact of unwanted noisy sound and instead enhance the relevant\nsounds around us, it would contribute towards maintaining heart health every\nday.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOticon\nMore<\/a>\u2122 hearing aids feature advanced noise\nreduction working in unison with a deep neural network allowing users to hear\nALL relevant sounds. This is a completely new way to support hearing loss,\nbreaking with the tradition of directionality technology which fundamentally\nlimits what a hearing aid user can hear at any one time. Oticon More\u2122 enables a user to hear more naturally and also ensures sound is\n\u2018comfortable\u2019 to listen to, creating the perfect conditions to help reduce\nlistening effort and stress, which as per Oticon\u2019s real-world study, would help\nwith heart health in the noisy environments that users face on a daily basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cNoise,\nwhich essentially is unwanted sound, can be terribly unhealthy\u201d, says Jeppe H\u00f8y\nChristensen, researcher, Eriksholm Research Centre, part of Oticon. \u201cCreating a\nlink between lab studies and user provided research, we can confidently say\nthat by effectively making noise less burdensome by enhancing relevant sounds,\nthrough hearing technology we will be able to help improve not only the brain\nbut also the heart health of our hearing aid users.
